The Australian Grand Prix is the oldest surviving motor racing competition held in Australia. It was originally held at Phillip Island in 1928 though this wasnt part of the FIA calendar, but part of the National Australian Championship.
But in the 1985 Formula One season the race became part of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit at Albert Park in Melbourne is its current venue.From 1985 to 1996 Adelaide Street Circuit in Adelaide, South Australia was the previous venue.
The Australian Grand Prix has been an opening race of the season for a few years. When it was held in Adelaide, the Australian Grand Prix was the final round of the Championship.
